Much like Squid Game season 1, Squid Game season 2 is full of all kinds of plot twists, and here are the 10 best ones. Although Squid Game season 2’s seven-episode order is shorter than that of its predecessor, the newest batch of episodes still managed to pack itself with all kinds of twists and wild new directions, making for an incredibly exciting story. Whether it be character deaths, plot reveals, or anything else, these 10 moments from Squid Game season 2 are the ones that left viewers the most shocked.

Squid Game season 2 picks up three years after the events of the first season, with the previous winner Seong Gi-hun returning to the island in an attempt to take down the Front Man and the competition as a whole. After things go horribly wrong, however, Gi-hun finds himself having to survive the week of games once again, this time with an all-new cast of Squid Game supporting characters. Unlike season 1, season 2 of Squid Game doesn’t cover the entire week, with it only featuring the first three games and saving the latter three for Squid Game season 3.

The Recruiter Is Killed In A Game Of Russian Roulette

In The First Episode Of Season 2

Squid Game season 2, episode 1 is all about the hunt for the Recruiter (also known as the Salesman), the individual who wears a suit, carries a briefcase, and challenges people to games of Ddakji before inviting them to the games. Gi-hun hires a variety of men to hunt him town, and two of them eventually find him. However, the Recruiter is on to them, with him kidnapping the men and forcing them to play a game of Russian Roulette. The Recruiter then goes to where Gi-hun has been living, with him playing Russian Roulette alongside Gi-hun.

The Recruiter raises the stakes by not rolling the barrel after each shot, meaning that the chances of dying go up each turn. As it turns out, the bullet isn’t fired until the sixth and final shot, with this being on the Recruiter’s turn. Despite death being certain, the Recruiter pulls the trigger and dies. This is a major deal for the world of Squid Game, as it raises the question of who will replace him for the next competition.

Gi-hun’s Dental Implant Tracker Was Removed

But How Isn’t Revealed Until Much Later

After failing to kidnap the Front Man, Gi-hun decides to volunteer to participate in the games again, with him being knocked out and waking up on the island. Previously, Gi-hun had gotten a tracker put in his mouth as part of a dental implant, with the false tooth still being in his mouth when he arrived on the island. Following the tracker, Gi-hun’s army of mercenaries plan on storming the island, freeing Gi-hun, and taking down the games. However, when they get to the tracker, they discover that it isn’t on Gi-hun. Instead, it has been taken out and placed in fishing bait.

This means that the Front Man or some of the Pink Soldiers discovered the tracker on Gi-hun, removed it, and gave it to the fisherman in order to mess with Gi-hun. This highlights how many steps ahead of Gi-hun the Front Man is, something that becomes increasingly more apparent as season 2 continues.

The Front Man Joins The Games

Pretending To Be Oh Young-Il

After the first game, the remaining players are allowed to vote on whether they want to suspend the games and go home. Players vote in descending order starting with the highest number, and the final vote was the deciding one. This final vote was cast by Player 001, a previously unseen character. However, when Player 001 is revealed, it becomes clear that this character is actually the Front Man.

As it turns out, the Front Man decides to participate in season 2’s Squid Game, with this being one of season 2’s shocking reveals. He introduces himself as Oh Young-Il and becomes friends with Gi-hun, with Gi-hun being none the wiser. For the rest of Squid Game season 2, Young-Il pretends to be allies with Gi-hun’s team of players, although he ends up sabatoging Gi-hun’s resistance plan and faking his own death in the Squid Game season 2 finale.

The Six-Legged Pentathalon

The Second Game Was A Massive Switch

The first game of Squid Game season 2 is Red Light, Green Light, the same first game that was seen in Squid Game season 1. Since Gi-hun knows the strategy, he is able to help many of the players survive. Since the players learn that Gi-hun previously won the Squid Game, they vote to stay for one more game, with them believing that he can help them survive due to his experience. Ahead of the second game, Gi-hun tells everyone how to win the dalgona game, which was the second game in season 1. They all decide to pick the traingle and confidently enter the courtyard.

However, upon seeing the second game, it turns out that dalgona isn’t the second game. Instead, the second game is a six-legged pentathalon, in which teams of five must complete five minigames and finish the race within five minutes. This is a huge reveal for Squid Game season 2, as it is the first time that viewers learn that the Squid Game competition won’t be the same as it was in season 1.

Yong-sik Votes To Keep The Games Going

Seemingly Betraying His Mother

Park Yong-sik and Jang Geum-ja are two of the most interesting characters in Squid Game season 2, with the mother and son working on surviving the games together. Although they both decide they want to go home, Yong-sik betrays his mother in a major way after the six-legged pentathalon. Despite being one of the last to cast in the close vote, Yong-sik votes to stay for one more game, to the shock of his mother.

Geum-ja takes Yong-sik’s vote as her son gambling with her life, with this leading to a major divide in their relationship. Yong-sik’s care for his mother throughout the previous episodes made this decision shocking, with it highighting how divisive the Squid Game competition’s money can be.

Min-su Betrays Se-mi During Mingle

He Sides With Thanos & Nam-gyu

Squid Game season 2’s third game Mingle is interesting, with it having a number called out and forcing the players to get into groups and run into a room within the allotted time. The team of Thanos, Nam-gyu, Min-su, and Se-mi work together throughout season 2, although this all changes when Mingle calls for a group of three. Thanos and Nam-gyu force Min-Su and Se-mi to play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide on who goes with them and who stays behind.

Se-mi tells Min-su to leave Thanos and Nam-gyu, with her extending her hand so that Min-su can join her and find a third person. Realizing that Se-mi extended hand looks like paper, Min-su casts scissors, with him winning the game and joining the room with Thanos and Nam-gyu. Se-mi manages to survive the game by finding another group, although she feels betrayed by Min-su for the rest of the season.

The Boat Captain Is Working For The Games

He Has Been Leaking Information To The Front Man

Squid Game season 2 reveals that police officer Hwang Jun-ho survived Squid Game season 1, with a boat captain finding him in the water and saving his life. Jun-ho and Captain Park have become friends in the years since season 1, with the two working together to find the mysterious island. The boat captain even drives the boat when Gi-hun’s mercenaries join, with them following Gi-hun’s tracker in an attempt to find the island.

However, one of the mercenaries catches the boat captain sabotaging a drone, revealing that he is a traitor who has been working for the Squid Games the whole time. Captain Park kills the man who noticed him and continues to work as a mole, a storyline that will most likely be continued in Squid Game season 3.

Myung-ji Kills Thanos

With A Fork From His Meal

Thanos is presented as the main villain of Squid Game season 2, with him intentionally getting players killed, voting to stay in the games, and sewing dissent between the two groups. Thanos survives all three of the game throughout season 2, with many players expecting him to survive and continue his villainy in season 3. However, this all changes during Squid Game season 2’s secret game.

When the fight breaks out between the X and O teams, Thanos begins choking Myung-ji, with him nearly killing the cryptocurrency YouTuber. However, Myung-ji manages to use the fork from his meal to stab Thanos, killing him. This means that one of Squid Game season 2’s most interesting new characters will not be in season 3, with this being one of the most surprising deaths in season 2.

Gyung-seok Is Killed During The Shootout

Despite How Much His Story Was Teased

The story of Pink Soldier 011, also known as Kang No-eul, is one of the most interesting arcs in Squid Game season 2. Before traveling to work in the Squid Games, No-eul takes notice of Gyung-seok, a man who is trying to treat his daughter’s blood cancer. Despite her being quick to kill the players, No-eul seems to sympathize with Gyung-seok, with many viewers expecting him to have a big role in season 3.

However, after surrendering during the season 2 finale’s shootout, Gyung-seok is killed by a random Pink Soldier. This was incredibly exciting due to how important Gyung-seok seemed to be early in Squid Game season 2, with it being one of the show’s most wild twists.

The Front Man Kills Jung-bae

Ending The Life Of Gi-hun’s Best Friend

Jung-bae is Gi-hun’s right hand man throughout Squid Game season 2, with the two being friends even before the Squid Games started. The duo works together throughout the competition and even venture off together to find the Front Man during the season’s final shootout.

However, Gi-hun and Jung-bae are caught by the Front Man. Instead of killing Gi-hun, the Front Man shoots and kills Jung-bae, leaving Gi-hun to continue participating in the next game. This is a tragic note to end Squid Game season 2 on, wtih it being the final major twist in the season.
