The US Monkeypox Response Is Failing Queer Men | 2022

on

Since the outbreak of monkeypox in the United States, queer men have been largely left out of the conversation and response effort. This is a problem because queer men are some of the most susceptible to the disease.

There are a few reasons for this. First, pox is primarily spread through contact with infected animals, and queer men are more likely to work with or be around animals. Second, queer men are more likely to live in close quarters with others, which makes it easier for the disease to spread. Finally, queer men are more likely to have weakened immune systems, which makes them more susceptible to the disease. The US monkeypox response needs to do better in addressing the needs of queer men.

World Health Organization Declared Monkeypox A Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a global health emergency on Wednesday after the disease was found in humans in three African countries.
The WHO said that it is deeply concerned about the outbreak of monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Nigeria. So far, there have been a total of 21 confirmed cases of pox in humans, including three deaths.
Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that is similar to smallpox. It is typically found in rodents and primates in Africa and can be spread to humans through contact with an infected animal. The disease can also be spread from person to person through close contact.

The US Declared The Monkeypox Outbreak

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared a monkeypox outbreak in the country. This viral disease, which is similar to smallpox, is typically found in Africa. However, there have been a handful of cases in the US in the past, mostly in people who have been to Africa.

This recent outbreak began in late April in the Midwest. There have been a total of 47 cases reported in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. The CDC is working with state and local health officials to investigate and respond to the outbreak.
Monkeypox is a rare disease that can be deadly in some cases. However, most people who contract the virus will recover.
